Philadelphia and Reading may soon be connected by passenger rail again—something the region hasn’t seen in over 40 years. The Schuylkill River Passenger Rail Authority (SRPRA) is moving forward with plans to restore service along the corridor that links Reading, Pottstown, Phoenixville, and Philadelphia.
The initiative has gained significant federal support through the Federal Railroad Administration’s Corridor Identical and Development Program, which provides planning and funding resources to help turn long-discussed concepts into reality.

Board members of SRPRA met within recent month at the restored Phoenixville Train Station to discuss ongoing process, community engagement, and corridor development. Officials from PennDOT, including Secretary Mike Carroll and Deputy Secretary Meredith Biggica, reinforced the state’s commitment to the project.

The restoration of passenger rail between Reading and Philadelphia will work…having that additional capacity on passenger rail is good news
The project aims to provide efficient, accessible, and sustainable transit for growing communities along the route, including Phoenixville, which recently added nearly 5,000 residents and continues to expand is residential and business footprint.
What are the benefits of passenger rail? ✨
🚀 Economic Development: Potential to generate $1.4 billion in income, over $1 billion in new property development, and new job opportunities.
🤝 Equity & Empowerment: Expands access to jobs, arts, small businesses, and resources for underserved communities — 28,000 additional person-years of work possible.
🚌 Increased Mobility: Reliable, efficient travel between Reading, Philadelphia, and potentially future connections to Harrisburg and Allentown.
💰 Lower Transportation Costs: More affordable than driving for long distances.
🌿 Improved Air Quality: Fewer car trips, reduced emissions, and cleaner diesel operations with Amtrak Airo trains.
🚦 Reduced Traffic Congestion: Estimated 1.37 million rail riders off the roads in 2030, helping ease 422 corridor congestion.
When Could Passenger Rail Start? ⁉️
While no official start date has been set, federal funding and state support signal strong momentum. SRPRA emphasizes public involvement, with meetings open to the community and informational sessions available for residents along the route.
After decades of discussion, the Reading-Philadelphia passenger rail line could finally move from concept to reality— transforming transportation, supporting economic growth, and connecting communities across Southeastern Pennsylvania.
