Its silhouette, built by Philadelphia’s own visionary architect Napoleon LeBrun in 1864, was inspired by Rome’s San Carlo al Corso (Lombard Church of St. Charles) — a Roman-Baroque style church that stands as one of the most influential landmarks in Italy.
With its massive stone columns and imposing dome, the Basilica is Philadelphia’s largest brownstone structure to date. Complete with elaborate murals, stained glass windows and intricate carvings, the spellbinding cathedral stands as a pure architectural masterpiece.
