The Roots Picnic officially returns to Philadelphia this weekend May 30 and 31, bringing thousands of music fans to Belmont Plateau for one of the city’s biggest summer festivals. Founded in 1897 by Questlove and Black Thought, The Roots have always stayed deeply connected to Philadelphia culture. Long before becoming global music icons, the duo famously busked on street corners around the University of Pennsylvania.
Now, ahead of Roots Picnic weekend, Apple Maps have spotlighted “The Roots’ Philly Spots,” a curated collection of the brand’s favorite local destinations across the city—from legendary sandwich shops to bookstores and scenic river trails.
For locals and visitors alike, these Philly-approved spots offer the perfect way to experience the city through the eyes of The Roots before heading to one of the biggest music weekends of the year.
Here are some of the Philly spots Questlove and Black Thought say every visitor should check out this weekend.
Angelo’s Pizzeria 🍕
Widely considered one of the best cheesesteak spots in the city, Angelo’s has become a mandatory stop for locals and tourists alike. Known for its freshly baked seeded rolls, massive sandwiches, and long lines, the South Philly staple continues to dominate the city’s food scene.
“Summertime in Philly is synonymous with good food,” Black Thought said. “We advise everyone (out-of-towners especially) to stop at Angelo’s Pizzeria for the best cheesesteak around.”
Joan Shepp 👗
The longtime Philly fashion institution has been curating designer clothing and contemporary styles for decades. Black Thought called the boutique a city staple for shoppers looking for elevated fashion with personality.
“A Philly institution that has been around for over 50 years,” he said. “There are more than enough unisex items.”
Harriett’s Bookshop 📚
Owned by Jeannine Cook, Harriett’s Bookshop has become one of Philadelphia’s most beloved independent bookstores. The cozy Fishtown shop specializes in books written by Black women authors and has developed by a loyal following for its thoughtfully curated atmosphere.
“A great book and bench in Rittenhouse Square park is the ultimate summertime vibe in Philly,” Questlove said.
Ricci’s Hoagies 🥖
If cheesesteaks aren’t your thing, Questlove says Philly’s iconic hoagies deserve just as much attention. Ricci’s has earned a cult following for its oversized Italian hoagies layered with meats, cheese, lettuce, onions, and oil-packed flavor.
“Not the sub, or the here: It’s the hoagie!” Questlove said.
Philadelphia Record Exchange 🎶
Vinyl lovers will want to carve out time for Philadelphia Record Exchange, a longtime favorite destination for collectors searching for rare records, classics, and hidden gems.
“Head to Philadelphia Record Exchange to locate vinyl of any song you can’t get out of your head,” Black Thought said.
Schuylkill Banks 🚴
For a scenic break from festival crowds, Questlove recommends heading to the Schuylkill River Trail. The waterfront path offers skyline views, biking routes, walking trails, and one of the city’s best outdoor escapes.
“Health is wealth,” Questlove said. “Take a walk, run, or ride along the Schuylkill River Banks.”
Chuck’s Homemade Water Ice 🍧
Though temporarily closed and expected to reopen soon, Chuck’s remain one of South Philly’s most iconic summertime treats. Known for its classic Italian water ice flavors, the beloved neighborhood spot has been cooling down locals for generations.
“A Philadelphia delicacy that never disappoints,” Black Thought said.
