April is National Poetry Month, a moment to exalt the human expressiveness of such a distinct format. Undeniably, Philadelphia is a city built on expression and art, where people from every neighborhood are unified through creativity. One local organization, Voices In Power, has curated an upcoming experience to celebrate not only the art form, but also, the artist. ‘Poets Gon’ Poet’ is an inaugural awards ceremony and a celebration of creativity, art, poetry, and the myriad of human emotions that bind us all together.
Poets Gon’ Poet
Presented by Voices In Power (VIP), ‘Poets Gon’ Poet’ is an inaugural awards ceremony and the first of its kind in Philadelphia. In celebration of the 13th anniversary of VIP, founder Luis Marrero, wanted to curate an immersive experience unlike anything the city has ever seen. More than just an awards ceremony, as Luis describes it, “it’s a milestone in history—a celebration of resilience, creativity, and the unifying power of words presented by one of the largest pillars in poetry today.”
More than 500+ individuals will come together under one roof to revel in an art form that has propelled human expression. Indeed, the energy will envelop you as you listen to captivating performance pieces from spoken word artists from across the country. Next, for those who are intrigued by the art form, an interactive time capsule celebrating the global impact of poetry will captivate and educate viewers.
“Imagine stepping into a world where poetry transcends the page, where words dance in the air, and the very essence of human experience is captured in verse“, Luis illustrates, “The Poets Gon’ Poet Awards is set to be an evening where the vibrancy of our community, the depth of our passions, and the breadth of our dreams converge in a spectacle of artistic expression.”
The Grammy’s Of Poetry
In a world where spoken word can sometimes be overlooked, Voices In Power (VIP) brings it to the forefront. Specifically, ‘Poets Gon’ Poet’ is the Grammy’s of poetry. However, there’s no payola or backdoor methods of winning – the winners are chosen by the public. Grammy-nominated artists and influencers throughout the creative community will be in attendance to present awards in the following categories:
- the Poet of the Year award
- the Poem of the Year award
- the Poetry Book of the Year award
- the Best Performance Poet award
- the Rising Star Poet award
- the Most Supportive Poet award
- the Viral Poet award
- the Community Choice award
- the Best Open Mic award
- the Social Impact award
- the Poet / Host award
- the Love Poet award
- the Inspirational Poet award
- the Bar Heavy Poet award
Notably, this awards ceremony is more than a gathering; it’s a statement, a necessary one.
Remarking on its impact, Luis emphasizes, “it’s about recognizing the poets who’ve touched our hearts, challenged our perceptions, and pushed the boundaries of what poetry can be. But beyond the accolades, it’s a declaration of the enduring relevance and necessity of poetry in our lives and in the broader cultural landscape.”

About Voices In Power
Simply put, Voices In Power (VIP) is “the place artists call home”, but there’s nothing simple about this experience. VIP is a community-based poetry open mic experience that provides a platform for aspiring & established poets & writers. It’s a place to share their voices & creativity. Their goal is to “foster a diverse & inclusive space where individuals can express themselves freely & connect with like-minded individuals.”
Not your average open mic, VIP brings together local food, drinks, live art, music, games, vendors, and of course, poetry.
Moreover, what started as an open mic night in Philadelphia has grown to cities all over the county and now, internationally. Snaps, snaps!
