Germantown Avenue is getting its glow back. The Chestnut Hill Conservancy’s Night of Lights returns from Friday, October 2 through Monday, October 5. From 7 to 9 PM each evening, historic images and archival video with light up the neighborhood’s streetscape. Now in its ninth year, the exhibition weaves together the layered history of Chestnut Hill, Northwest Philadelphia, and the lower Wissahickon watershed — all told through light.
This year, the event joins Philadelphia’s official PHL250 programming, the city’s milestone 250th anniversary celebration. A $20,000 grant from the Philadelphia City Fund is backing expanded installations that go deeper into the shared histories on display.
What’s happening each night — and beyond
The opening night on Friday, October 2 kicks off with the traditional Flip the Switch ceremony at the Conservancy’s headquarters at 8708 Germantown Ave at 7 PM. Later that evening, the Chestnut Hill Business District hosts its regular First Friday programming alongside Night of Lights. Attendees can enjoy live music, local storytellers, interactive activities, vendors, and giveaways running 7–9 PM.
On Sunday, October 4, Hilltop Books hosts the event’s first-ever family program. Starting at 10 AM, young enthusiasts can enjoy a morning reading of Bizarre Bugs, Toads, and Butt-Breathers.
The grant-funded programming extends beyond the four-night run. On October 15, the Conservancy launches its inaugural 10×10 History Jam. The event brings together speakers from across Northwest Philadelphia to share stories of local history, arts, architecture, and preservation. Night of Lights is free and open to the public. All four evenings run 7–9 PM along Germantown Avenue in Chestnut Hill.
