South Philadelphia is getting a major grocery upgrade. The long-vacant Walgreens at Broad and Snyder Streets will soon be transformed into Met Fresh Philadelphia, the city’s first-ever location of the beloved New-York supermarket chain.
Scheduled to open in early 2026, the 13,000-square-foot store will bring fresh produce, a full-service deli, and even a pharmacy to a neighborhood that’s been lacking nearby grocery options. For local residents, the new Met Fresh Philadelphia marks not only a new place to shop, but also the revival of a community corner once left empty.
😱 Why NYC locals swear Met Fresh is better than Acme
Known for blending neighborhood charm with modern convenience, Met Fresh has built a loyal, cult-like following across New York City’s boroughs.
Founded 15 years ago, this family-owned grocery chain thrives on its community-first approach —offering quality produce, a full-service deli, and fair prices without losing that market feel. Shoppers in Brooklyn and the Bronx often describe Met Fresh as “big enough to have everything, but small enough to you know your name.”
The South Philadelphia location will mark Met Fresh’s first venture outside the NYC metro area, making it a significant expansion milestone.
👀 What can Philly shoppers expect?
The new 13,000-square-foot Met Fresh Philadelphia supermarket will feature a pharmacy, a full deli, and fresh produce sourced locally when possible.
Owner Omar Hamdan shared that the store will also offer free grocery and perception delivery for seniors.
Additionally, Hamdan plans on hiring 30 to 40 part-time and full-time employees from the neighborhood.
Met Fresh has also applied for a beer and wine license. Indeed this will make the store a convenient one-stop for South Philly residents.
Specifically the new project will include
- extensive renovations
- modern refrigeration system
- a fresh new facade to revitalize the corner of Broad and Snyder
📆 When will Met Fresh open in South Philly?
Renovations are scheduled to begin in 2025, with an official opening planned for early 2026.
The South Philadelphia location will be located in the former Walgreens at 2014 S. Broad Street. The location was chosen for its walkability and lack of nearby grocery options.
Hamdan called the new store “a test pilot to see how we do in the Philly market.”
He added he’s “excited for Philadelphia shoppers to experience what makes Met Fresh special.”
