Philadelphia-area paddlers have a chance to visit one of South Jersey’s most under-the-radar natural escapes without ever getting in a car.
On Saturday, Aug. 15, Glen Foerd is hosting a guided Kayak Adventure to Amico Island, taking participants across the Delaware River. Amico Island State Park is a peaceful New Jersey state park known for its sandy beach, wooded trails and abundant wildlife.
The four-and-a-half-hour excursion offers a rare opportunity to experience the river while exploring a destination the many local have never visited.
Paddle to one of South Jersey’s hidden gems
Tucked between the Delaware River and Rancocas Creek in Delran, Amico Island Park is one of South Jersey’s best-kept secrets. Surrounded by water on three sides, the peninsula is popular with birdwatchers, photographers, and hikers looking for a quiet escape close to Philly.
The park’s 1.7-mile trails winds through wooded areas and along the shoreline. Visitors may spot great blue herons, egrets, turtles, ducks, and even deer. Not to mention, the island is home to more bird species than any other park in Burlington County. Indeed it’s a favorite destination for nature lovers.
During the guided trip, the participants will launch from Glen Foerd in tandem kayaks before paddling across the Delaware River to the island. After arriving, the group will enjoy a picnic lunch provided by Glen Foerd. Guests will then have time to hike the trails or relax on the beach. Or, you can continue paddling along the island’s shoreline and sheltered coves.
The excursion is designed for people who are comfortable kayaking for an extended period in open water. Previous advanced kayaking experience isn’t required, but participants should expect changing conditions that may include wind, current, and tidal movement.
