Don’t put that umbrella away just yet, Philly. A flash flood watch is in effect for the entire Philadelphia area from 2 p.m. Thursday through 6 a.m. Friday.
Specifically, the region faces a moderate risk of flash flooding -the second-highest level on the agency’s scale- indicating that multiple flash floods are likely.
Additionally, the National Weather Service is forecasting a slight chance of scattered severe thunderstorms across much of the Philadelphia area, with strong winds posing the primary threat.
Here’s what you need to know to stay safe.
Safety tips while the flash flood watch is active:
- stay off flooded roads. It only takes six inches of water to cause loss of control in most vehicles. Turn around, don’t drown.
- Avoid underpasses and low-lying areas. Water collects fast and can become dangerous within minutes.
- Keep devices charged and have flashlights ready in case of power outages.
- Delay unnecessary travel. If you don’t have to be on the this evening until midnight, don’t be.
- Secure outdoor belongings like trash bings and patio furniture before storms hit.
City officials and emergency crews will be monitoring throughout the day and evening.
Flash floods are particularly dangerous because they happen fast, often, and with little warning.
As always, keep an eye on real-time updates from the National Weather Service and local officials.
Stay safe, Philly -and stay dry.
