In a new WalletHub study ranking the most stressed-out cities in the U.S., Philadelphia landed in the top 10. Apparently, Philadelphians are more stressed than people living in other major metropolitan areas like Washington D.C. and New York City.
Here’s why it matters:
America we have a problem
Between gridlocked commutes, economic pressure, and the daily hustle, stress in the city isn’t just a mood- it’s a measurable reality.
WalletHub compared over 180 U.S.cities using 39 data points including average weekly work hours, jobless rates, and divorce stats to get a full picture of where stress is spiking.
According to the American Psychological Association, over 77% of Americans feel stressed about the future, and 73% are anxious about the economy. And while some stress can actually keep us motivated, Psychology Today warns that long-term, unmanaged “chronic stress” is where the real health damage kicks in.
Chip Lupo, WalletHub analyst, explained the findings further:
Some stress is out of our control, due to issues with family, friends or employers. However, where you live can play a big role in how stressed you are. Cities with high crime rates, weak economies, less effective public health and congested transportation systems naturally lead to elevated stress levels for residents. When moving, it’s important to consider how a certain city may impact your mental health – not just your financial opportunities.”
Stressed-out Philly
Specifically, when it comes to the most stressed-out cities, Philly ranks number 7.
Check out the interactive map below to see all the stressed-out cities across America:
In Philly’s case, long work hours, public safety concerns and rising costs are likely contributing factors.
Moreover, the city is feeling the consequences of a current union-force strike including sanitation workers, 911 dispatchers, certain airport employees, and more seeking fairer wages.
In fact, it’s the largest blue-collar strike in the last 40 years.
Ultimately, awareness is power.
Knowing how our city ranks can help residents prioritize self-care, mental health resources, and community connection.
So, if you’re feeling the heat, you’re not alone.
Take breaks.
Find your escape whether it’s a walk along Kelly Drive, or a visit to your favorite park, or (dare we say) some time offline.
Indeed, Philly’s got stress…but we’ve also got heart.
