A nearly forgotten piece of silent-film history is getting a rare Philadelphia screening this September. The Secret Cinema is bringing The Blasphemer, a 1921 silent melodrama, to Glen Foerd for one night only, complete with a live musical accompaniment on the historic estate’s restored 1902 Haskell Pipe Organ.
The screening takes place Thursday, September 10. Moviegoers will have a chance to see the rarely screened film in a historic Delaware River setting.
What is The Blasphemer?

Directed on by O.E. Goebel and starring George Howard and Augusta Anderson, The Blasphemer follows a wealthy businessman whose greed and infidelity send his life into a dramatic downward spiral.
The film was produced by the Catholic Art Association as a morality tale intended to promote spiritual virtue. However, its story also delivers the kind of sensational twists and dramatic downfall that make silent-era melodramas so fascinating today.

The screening will feature live accompaniment from Philadelphia native Don Kinnier, who has been playing music for silent films for more than 55 years. Kinnier is considered a leading silent-era musician and has performed internationally, including longtime collaborations with historic organs as Longwood Gardens.
Doors open at 7 p.m., giving guests time to explore Glen Foerd’s historic mansion and grounds before the film begins at 7:30 p.m. The screening runs until approximately 9:30 p.m. It will take place in the estate’s second-floor art gallery, which is accessible by stairs only.
How much are tickets?

General admission is $25, while students and seniors can attend for $20. A pop-up bar will also be available before and after the screening. Guests can purchase soft pretzels, soft drinks, beer, and wine for purchase.
