In 2023, USA TODAY named Philadelphia the best city in the nation for street art. But in 2024, we lost the title only to reclaim it once more in 2025. Indeed, the city known as the “Mural Capital of the World” is deserving of the of title. With another Lombardi Trophy, to giant captivating murals garnering national attention, Philly is on a winning streak.
Mural Capital of the World
For over 40 years Philadelphia has been known as the “Mural Capital of the World” thanks to the plentiful murals throughout our city. In fact, there’s over 4000. Undeniably, Mural Arts Philadelphia is the driving force behind the city’s street art scene. Founded in 1984, Mural Arts Philadelphia began as a way to change public perception about graffiti and help establish it as an art form –because it is.
Philadelphia is proud to be home to one of the world’s largest – and most accessible – public art collections. From breathtaking murals and sculptures to dynamic installations, the city’s streets, parks and public spaces serve as an ever-evolving, open-air gallery for residents and visitors alike to explore and enjoy.
Street art embodies the city’s culture both past and present. It is a creative reflection of artistic expression. The mission of Mural Arts Philadelphia is to beautify, inspire, and empower. Every year the organization 50-100 public arts projects further propelling Philadelphia to a city that is rich in street art.
Additionally, there are notable groups and artists contributing to Philly’s vibrant art scene inducing:
- HAHA x Paradigm – A three-person artist group that has created knockout work in and beyond Queen Village.
- V.U.R.T. Creative – An urban renewal nonprofit known for making playful murals in Port Richmond and Fishtown.
- Percy Street Project – A small block in South Philadelphia illuminated with original neon and artwork, known as “The Electric Street.”
- Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens – The ever-present tiled mosaics of veteran artist Isaiah Zagar, with his South Street landmark serving as a gateway to his work throughout the city.
- Symone Salib, Amberella and Alloyius Mcilwaine – Philadelphia-based wheatpaste and graffiti artists who have built major followings through their street art.
Best city for street art
After losing the title in 2024, Philadelphia has reclaimed its title as the best city for street art. A panel of experts, including editors from USA TODAY and 10Best.com, nominated Philadelphia for the accolade through a careful review process.
