Looking for a unique way to spend a spring night in Philadelphia? A special after-dark experience is brining together nature, history, and astronomy for our unforgettable evening in Fairmount Park.
‘Park After Dark: Moonwalk + Stargazing‘ invites guests to explore the park under the glow of the moon on Tuesday, May 19, from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Hosted by Fairmount Park Conservancy, the event begins with a 1.5-mile guided hike along the historic Trolley Trail, once used by a real trolley line that operated from 1896 to 1946.
Along the way, participants will learn about the park’s history and the nocturnal wildlife that calls it home—before shifting focus to the sky above.

Astronomer and educator Buddy Muhler will guide the stargazing portion of the evening, offering tips for beginners and deeper insights for seasoned skywatchers. Guests will even get the chance to view the moon up close through a high-powered telescope, spotting details like lunar “seas” and bright highlands.

The event begins at the Belmont Plateau parking lot near Belmont Mansion. It covers about 1.5 miles of moderately challenging terrain. It’s open to adults and families with children ages six and up. Moreover, all minors must be accompanied by an adult.
Tickets are just $15, and guests are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes, bring water, and pack a flashlight or headlamp. You’re also welcome to bring your own telescope or binoculars. Additionally, you can bring a blanket or chair for the stargazing portion.
Lastly, in case of cloudy weather, the event will be rescheduled.
