As Philly prepares for a dangerous stretch of summer weather, Wawa Welcome America organizers have announces several schedule changes, cancellations, and venue adjustments for events taking place this week.
The updates come as the National Weather Service’s Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect from noon on Wednesday, July 1 through 8 p.m. on Saturday, July 4. As reported, heat index values are expected to climb well above 100 degrees throughout the region.
Festival organizers say the changes are intended to keep attendees, performers, volunteers, and staff safe while still allowing many of the city’s signature Independence Week celebrations to move forward.
Why Wawa Welcome America events are changing
A powerful heat dome has settled across much of the easter United States, bringing dangerous temperatures and high humidity to Philadelphia just as thousands of residents and visitors prepare for Fourth of July festivities.
Officials are urging attendees to stay hydrated, seek air-conditioned spaces when possible, and take advantage of additional cooling measures that will be available at festival events.
