Wawa is set to close two more of its stores in later this month. The impending closures continues a trend of recent closures across the region.
Wawa to close two more stores
Specifically, the store located along the 6500 block of Frankford Avenue will permanently shut its doors on April 22.
Just two days later, the Wawa at the 6900 block of Castor Avenue will also close, marking yet another chapter in the company’s citywide scale-back.
These closures will bring the total number of Wawa stores in Philadelphia down to 17, and at least six locations have been shut down within city limits over the past four years. This follows a string of closures, including the Center City location at 33 S. 16th Street, which featured a popular pickup window and closed in December 2024.
However, the trend hasn’t been limited to just Philly.
Wawa has also pulled back in surrounding areas, including a drive-thru-only location in Bucks County that was closed in November, and a long-standing store along Route 70 in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, which had operated since the 1970s.
Despite its closures, Wawa says all employees have been offered positions at nearby locations.
The larger picture

While the company hasn’t provided detailed reasons for each shutdown, in the past safety has been a concern.
Or, perhaps, it points to a gradual change in consumer demand.
Nevertheless, the pattern reflects a broader shift in operations.
The company is focusing on larger stores -ones that sell gasoline and are more profitable.
Most of these locations are located in suburban areas outside of the city.
And now with the closing of two more city locations, many Philadelphians are wondering what’s next for the once-ubiquitous neighborhood staple.
