It’s no secret- Philadelphia is a city unlike any other. From its bustling neighborhoods, thriving arts scene, world-class cuisine, and unparalleled culture, there is so much to love about the city. In a recent comprehensive study, Philadelphia was ranked as one of the world’s top 1000 cities.
The World’s Top Cities
Recently, Oxford Economics’ Global Cities Index ranked the top cities in the world based on five categories: Economics, Human Capital, Quality of Life, Environment and Governance.
Specifically, each category is comprised of multiple indicators (four to six, depending on the category), which aim to address some of the most important considerations within their respective categories.
As a result, the Global Cities Index provides a more complete comparison of cities, by ranking them not just on their economic performance, but considering other important factors that influence their relative strengths. With a total of 1,000 cities and 27 indicators included, our truly global and multidimensional coverage allows us to provide a remarkable breadth and depth to the Global Cities Index.
New York City sits at number one, with other major world cities in the top ten including, London, San Jose, Tokyo, Paris, Seattle, Los Angeles, and more.
Philadelphia, The City of Brotherly Love, sits comfortably at 33 out of the 1000 of the world’s top cities.
An Economic Powerhouse
Indeed, Philadelphia is an economic powerhouse. The city ranked number 33 out of 1000 for good reason. Known as a hub for healthcare, education, and logistics, it comes as little surprise that the city boasts the 16th largest GDP in the world.
Philadelphia’s geographical location is also a plus. Situated in a strategic location between New York and Washington, DC in the northeast “Acela” corridor, Philadelphia’s position endows the city with a vast metropolitan population and facilitates access to other major markets.
The study found Philadelphia’s key strengths to be
- large GDP size
- many universities
- high income per person
However, the study also sited weaknesses in Philadelphia compared to the other cites. These included:
- less economic diversity
- lower income equality
- more natural disasters
