Whether you’re a die-hard Philly sports fan or simply looking for a unique summer night out, The Great American Tailgate is bringing together local food, live entertainment, and interactive museum experiences in the heart of Old City this week.
Hosted by the National Liberty Museum, the ticketed outdoor event takes place on Thursday, July 9, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. transforming the museum’s outdoor space into a celebration of Philadelphia’s sports culture and community spirit. Guests can sample bites from some of the city’s favorite restaurants while enjoying lawn games, music, and exclusive access to museum exhibitions.
Expect Philly food, music, and classic tailgate fun
The evening will feature tailgate-inspired dishes from several local favorites, including Kampar, Amy’s Pastelillos, Revolution House, and Franklin Fountain.
In addition to the food, attendees can enjoy live music, lawn games, family-fun, and interactive lawn games designed to capture the atmosphere of a Philly tailgate (minus the stadium parking lot).
Explore sports history and a brand-new exhibition
Admission also includes access to Sports Jawn, the museum’s exhibition highlighting the teams, athletes, and special moments that have helped define Philadelphia’s sports identity.
The exhibit features artifacts connected to local legends including Mike Schmidt, Julius “Dr. J.” Erving, Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber, Joel Embiid, and Dave “The Hammer” Schultz.
Guests will also be among the first to experience 2076: The Future of Free Assembly, the museum’s newest interactive exhibition. The experience invites visitors to imagine how Americans may gather and participate in civic life 50 years from now through hands-on displays and thought-provoking scenarios.

The Great American Tailgate takes place at the National Liberty Museum, located at 321 Chestnut Street in Philadelphia’s Old City neighborhood.
General admission tickets are $76, while a VIP hour begins at 5 p.m. before the main event opens to all guests from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The event offers a blend of food, fun, sports history, interactive exhibits, and high energy.
