For generations, the South 9th Street Italian Market has been the beating heart of South Philadelphia. It’s a place where the scent of fresh bread, simmering sauces and roasted coffee drifts through the bustling sidewalks beneath the colorful striped awnings. This weekend, the legendary stretch of South 9th Street becomes even more alive. The annual South 9th Street Italian Market Festival returns on May 16 and 17, 2026.
Running from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, the beloved festival transforms seven city blocks into what many consider Philly’s largest block party.
Thousands are expected to gather in the historic neighborhood for two days of food, music, culture, and long-standing traditions that celebrate one of the city’s most iconic communities.
A market built on generations of tradition 🇮🇹
Long before it became one of Philadelphia’s most beloved destinations, the South 9th Street Italian Market began as a gathering place for immigrants building new lives in the city during the late 1800s. What started a hub for Italian-owned butcher shops, bakeries, and produce stands eventually evolved into the oldest continuously operating open-air market in the United States.
Today, the market remains a vibrant reflection of Philadelphia’s immigrant history. Alongside historic Italian businesses, visitors will now find Mexican taquerias, Asian eateries, specialty grocers, cafes, and family-run shops that continue shaping the neighborhood’s identity.
Indeed, walking through the market is an experience for all the senses. Smell fresh cheeses stacked behind glass counters. See hanging meats in old-school butcher shops, hand-painted murals, overflowing produce stands and the unmistakable energy of South Philly culture.
