A severe thunderstorm threat temporarily halted Philadelphia’s One Philly Unity Concert for America on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway Friday night, forcing thousands of attendees to evacuate before the event resumed several hours later.
The concert was paused for nearly three hours as city officials monitored severe weather, including strong winds and thunderstorms. Once conditions improved, attendees were allowed to return shortly after midnight, and performances resumed.
The city’s Independence Day fireworks display followed around 2 a.m. on July 5 after the delayed concert concluded.

Early in the day, headliner Christina Aguilera was seen on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway during sound check ahead of the evening’s performance. However, following the lengthy weather delay and revised scheduled, Aguilera did not take the stage.
The remainder of the concert featured performances from The Roots, Will Smith, Meek Mill, DJ Jazzy Jeff, State Property, Kathy Sledge, Seal, Jordan Davis, Jill Scott, and other guests artists.
Mayor welcomed crowds back after evacuation 👋🏽
When the event resumed, Mayor Cherelle L. Parker returned to the stage with members of her administration to welcome concertgoers back after the evacuation. She led the crowd in a chant of:
“Ain’t no party like a Philly bloc party because a Philly block party don’t stop.”
According to the City of Philadelphia, emergency management officials, public safety agencies, the National Weather Service, and event organizers monitored conditions throughout the evening before determining it was safe to reopen the Parkway.
Fireworks launched after the concert resumed 🎇
To celebrate America’s 250th birthday in the place where it all started, the city put on a grand fireworks spectacle. The annual display launched around 2 a.m. July 5th, 2026, after the concert concluded. City officials said the display proceeded once weather conditions improved.
The One Philly Unity Concert marked the culmination of Philadelphia’s July Fourth celebration, which coincided with America250 programming and FIFA World Cup events throughout the city.
