A stunning world premiere performance is about to echo through one of Philadelphia’s most beautifully historic mansions. On Friday, March 20, the riverside estate of Glen Foerd will host the debut of Organum Mechanicum, a bold new composition written especially for the mansion’s historic 1902 Haskell player pipe organ.
The free public performance promises a powerful and immersive musical experience inside the halls of the estate.
What is Organum Mechanicum? 🎶
The groundbreaking piece was composed by Michael Leibowitz, a contemporary classical composer known for creating works that blend emotional depth with experimental structure.
Inspired by the rhythmic innovations of composer Conlon Nancarrow, Organum Mechanicum pushes the boundaries of what an organ can do. Instead of relying on a human performer, the composition is designed for the player pipe organ itself, allowing for the intricate musical patterns and rapid mechanical precision that would be impossible for a person to perform.
The result is a striking fusion of music, mechanics, and architecture as the historic instrument becomes both performer and centerpiece.

A historic organ comes to life ✨
Glen Foerd’s 1902 Haskell house organ, fully restored just two years ago, will take center stage during the performance. With its vast tonal range and complex mechanical system, the instrument can shift from delicate, interwoven melodies to thunderous waves of sound that fill the mansion.
Rather than treating the organ as a relic of the past, Organum Mechanicum reimagines it as a living instrument capable of bold contemporary music.
