Spring has officially sprung in the City of Brotherly Love and that means more time outdoors, socializing, and exploring. If you’re single in the city, maybe you’re on a mission to find a suitable partner. Well, according to data from the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey from 2018 to 2022, Philadelphia is the most single big city in the United States.
Single In The City
Before we dive into the analytics of it all, we even asked our Instagram followers if Philly is a good place to find love. Out of our 156K followers, the majority are Philadelphia natives or long-term residents. The consensus amongst those commenting were “no”. One follower in particular, even asked “is this a joke?” But what’s causing such a disparity between Philly and other cities? Our friends at The Inquirer, breaks down the data.
Specifically, some key findings include:
- Out of any of the most 10 populous U.S. cities, Philadelphians of all ages and races are less likely to be married.
- Men in Philly are among the least likely to be married, however, for Philly women, the gaps are much larger.
- The larger Philly metro area has a marriage rate in line with its peer, the inner city however, does not.
What Factors Contribute To Single Philly?
While there are many factors at play as to why there are more singles in one particular area, the answer isn’t cut and dry. Indeed, contributing factors can vary depending upon age groups, race, economic status, etc. In Philadelphia, apparently poverty, distance, transportation woes, and transience are all at play.
