This weekend, May 17-18, the South 9th Street Italian Market Festival returns. Festivalgoers can expect the unmistakable flavors, sounds, and spirit of one of the city’s most iconic neighborhoods.
The Italian Festival returns
Stretching from Fitzwater to Wharton along 9th street, the festival features over 100 vendors serving up an irresistible mix of old-world Italian favorites like handmade cannoli dusted in powdered sugar, to tacos, dumplings, roasted corn, and oh so much more.
Indeed, the market may be Italian by name, but it celebrates all the flavors that make Philly home.
Next, the sights and sounds are just as rich.
Live music pays from multiple stages, dancers perform in the street, and the aroma of garlic, basil, and espresso fills the air.
Additionally, local artists, craftspeople, and family-run businesses line the sidewalk granting endless blocks of shopping. From hand-poured candles to custom jewelry, and of course, Rocky and Philly merch.
Festival highlights
Undeniably, one of the most unforgettable moments of the weekend is the grease pole competition. A beloved South Philly tradition, this chaotic spectacle involves teams climbing a 30-f00t pole slathered in lard, trying to grab prizes like meats and cheeses from the top.
It’s messy, it’s hilarious, and it’s absolutely a Philly thing!
Then, on Sunday, the Procession of Saints adds a spiritual note, honoring the festival’s deep roots in faith and immigrant heritage.
What to know before you go:
Important to note, admission is free, and food and drink are pay-as-you-go.
Because parking in the area is limited, visitors are encouraged to use public transportation, walk, or catch a rideshare.
This annual event is fun for the entire family and a great way to make unforgettable memories.
The Italian Market Festival is more than a street fair- it’s a joyful, living tribute to community, culture, and the flavors that define South Philly.
