One of the best aspects about Philly is discovering all of its hidden gems and Hilo Fiber Bar is our latest discovery. Pronounced e-lo, it is a uniquely designed BYOB sip and strings workshop. With so many paint and sip classes happening across the region, it was nice to hear of a new angle in the art world.
Hilo, founded by Miranda G Lopez, was first born in 2020 in Philadelphia PA,. Lopez, an evolving artist, was introduced to string art early in her career. What began as creating yarn images on small canvases, later translated into murals and furniture. As her love for the tiny fibers grew, Lopez wanted to share this feeling of excitement and warmth with others, so she birthed Hilo Fiber Bar.
Perfect for a date night or a group day out, customers are able to visit their website and book one of two options: an open BYOB class or a private sip and strings class. The open BYOB class is about 2.5 hours and includes nails, wood canvas, hammers and yarn to make images come to life. Looking for something more private, the private session is about 3 hours in duration and also has the option to upgrade to brunch on Sundays to get your grub, sip, and string on!
Here’s A Thing About The Strings
You may be wondering what exactly is string art. String art is weaving colored string, wool, wire, or yarn between hammered nails to make geometric patterns. Maybe you remember experimenting with string art in elementary school as it is commonly used as an educational tool. Overtime however, it has grown into its own beautiful art form.
Women in Wood
In an industry dominated by men, with only 8% of woodworkers identifying as female, Hilo supports woman in wood shop/large machinery handling. Philly is the city of the underdog, the minority. We love to support businesses who break barriers and form new lanes. We love to discover hidden or new gems and glisten them by spreading the word and telling our friends.
Hilo Fiber Bar is that hidden gem we know Philly will embrace and love, so check them out! They aim to produce a creative , warm and welcoming environment where anyone can destress and give life to a new creative outlet.
