A hidden historic garden, free wine, and a bouquet you can build yourself? That’s the plan for First Friday in Old City. Elfreth’s Alley is inviting Philadelphians to slow down and enjoy an evening on one of the city’s most historic streets.
On Friday, September 4, the Elfreth’s Alley Museum will open its backyard garden from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. for a free First Friday gathering featuring wine, refreshments, light snacks, and local music. Guests can even visit a build-your-own flower bar and create a custom bouquet (for a fee).
Flowers, wine, and a hidden garden
The evening offers an easy way to experience one of Old City’s more unexpected spaces. Tucked behind the historic homes of Elfreth Alley, the museum’s garden provides a quieter setting for First Friday. Attendees are invited to sip wine, listen to music, and vibe with the community.
Those who want to take home something colorful can purchase flowers at the bar and arrange their own bouquet. All proceeds from the flower bar benefit Elfreth’s Alley Association. Specifically, the money goes toward the preservation of one of Philly’s most treasured historic landmarks.
First Friday with a side of history
Indeed, the setting itself is part of the experience. Dating back to 1702, Elfreth’s Alley is recognized as America’s oldest continuously inhabited residential street, making this more than just a garden hangout.
Admission to the First Friday gathering is free, as are the wine and light snacks. The build-your-own flower bar is the paid portion of the evening, with its proceeds supporting the nonprofit’s preservation work.
