When it comes to the top 71 most beautiful streets in the world, Elfreth’s Alley sits confidently at number 68. Ranking aside, it’s no surprise this tiny cobblestone alley in Philadelphia made the list. Indeed, a true hidden gem in Philly, once found, you’ll fall in love with its picturesque charm.
Today, the street consists of 32 residential homes that are in fact, inhabited. One of the most coveted dwellings in Philadelphia, it’s not very often a home on this street hits the real-estate market. Moreover, when it does it’s pricey. In 2019, a home on Elfreth’s Alley sold for an impressive $1.2 million!
Indeed, the architectonics of it all adds to its charming appeal. As one of the most beautiful streets in the world, Elfreth’s Alley is home to Federal and Georgian homes once occupied by the city’s tradesmen. Additionally, the Alley also features examples of Philadelphia’s famous Trinity Houses, small three to four story townhomes.
About Elfreth’s Alley
Dating back to 1703, Elfreth’s Alley is not only one of the most beautiful streets it is also one of the oldest.
In fact, it is the oldest continuously-inhabited street in America.
In the early 18th century, Elfreth’s Alley was originally created as a solution to overcrowding. Tradesman needed an alternative path to offset goods coming into the city through the nearby Delaware River ports.
Subsequently, a cart path was opened between two properties on the alley.
In 1703 the path became know as Elfreth’s Alley, named after blacksmith and land developer, Jeremiah Elfreth.
Today, both tourists and natives alike, can visit Elfreth’s Alley and take a historical stroll down 300 years of history on one residential street.
