One of the most legendary trains in American history is heading to Philadelphia this summer. Union Pacific Big Boy No. 4014 arrives in South Philly during Fourth of July weekend.
The massive steam locomotive, known as the world’s largest operating steam engine, will make a special stop in Philadelphia as part of a nationwide tour celebrating America’s 250th anniversary. The cross-country journey marks the first time the famous locomotive has traveled to the East Coast.
Originally built in 1942 for Union Pacific Railroad, Big Boy No. 4014 stretches 133 feet long and weighs an astonishing 1.2 million pounds. The locomotive was designed to haul heavy wartime equipment across the western United States and eventually traveled more than one million miles before retiring in 1961.
After years on display in California, the locomotive underwent a major restoration and officially returned to service in 2019.
