On August 19th, 2024 stargazers and astronomy enthusiasts around the world will have the chance to witness an exceptional celestial event – a rare super moon blue moon. This phenomenon is a combination of two unique celestial occurrences: a supermoon and a blue moon.
What is a Supermoon?
According to NASA, Supermoons occur when the moon’s orbit is closest to Earth at the same time as the moon is full.
The moon’s distance from Earth varies between about 221,457 miles and 252,712 miles.
August’s supermoon will be the first of four this year.
During this month’s supermoon peak, the moon will be around 225,288 miles from Earth.
The next will occur in September when the moon will be even closer to Earth, roughly 222,005 miles.
Then, in October, the full moon will be about 222,095 miles from Earth.
And finally in November –the last supermoon in the series– the moon will be around 224,385 miles from Earth.
Moreover, tonight’s moon isn’t just a supermoon, but a rare blue moon.
We’ve all heard the idiom “once in a blue moon” without knowing just how rare they actually are.
While 25% of full moons are super moons, according to NASA, just 3% of full moons are blue moons.
Look Up To The Sky
Many cultures and traditions have associated significance with the full moon, and this rare occurrence is no different. In some Native American cultures, August’s full moon is known as the “Sturgeon Moon,” named after the abundance of this fish during this time of year. In Hindu mythology, the blue moon is seen as both lucky and unlucky, symbolizing the balance of good and evil.
Observing this supermoon blue moon can be a magical experience. The best time to see it is as it rises or sets, when it appears the biggest due to an optical illusion. And for those wanting to enhance their viewing experience, finding a spot with less light pollution can make the moon appear even more vibrant and dazzling.
So, mark your calendars for August 19th and don’t miss this rare celestial show. Whether you believe in its mystical powers or simply appreciate its beauty, the supermoon blue moon is an event worth looking up for. And who knows – maybe it will inspire you to take a step back and appreciate the wonders of the universe.
The moon will rise tonight at 8:19 p.m.
