Philadelphia travelers will soon have another option for getting between the city, Pittsburgh, and New York City. Amtrak is planning to add a second daily round trip to its Pennsylvanian route later in 2026, expanding service along the 18-stop corridor.
The additional train will follow the existing route between Pittsburgh and New York City. And yes, it will include a stop at Philadelphia’s William H. Gray III 30th Street Station. Amtrak has not yet announced the exact launch date or schedule for the new service.
A second Pennsylvanian train is coming to Philadelphia
The Pennsylvanian currently operates one daily round trip between Pittsburgh and New York City. The eastbound train departs Pittsburgh Union Station at 7:30 a.m. and reaches New York in approximately nine hours and 20 minutes. The westbound train currently leaves New York at 11 a.m.
The route includes 18 stops, traveling through communities including Greensburg, Latrobe, Johnstown, Altoona, Harrisburg, Lancaster, and Philadelphia before reaching New York City.
The trip offers views of some of Pennsylvania’s best-known landscapes. Among them are the Allegheny Mountains, the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, and Pennsylvania Dutch Country.
The service expansion is connected to infrastructure improvements along the rail line between Pittsburgh and Harrisburg. It involves a partnership between Amtrak, PennDOT, and Norfolk Southern. The improvements are intended to support the additional frequency along the route.
What does this mean for Philadelphia?

For Philadelphia travelers, the second daily round trip could provide more flexibility for traveling between the city and destinations west, particularly Pittsburgh. It will also give travelers another option for trips between Philadelphia and New York.
Amtrak is expected to announce the official launch date and specific timetable for the additional Pennsylvanian train service later this year.
With ridership climbing and revenue expected to reach $3 billion, Amtrak is betting that rail’s momentum is only getting speed.
