Earlier today, the City of Philadelphia’s Department of Streets announced the indefinite closure of East Wyoming Avenue Bridge over Frankford Creek and Juniata Golf Course.
East Wyoming Bridge Closure
Effective Tuesday December 10, 2024, the East Wyoming Bridge over Frankford Creek, Fishers Lane/I Street, and the Juniata Golf Course, between Maple Lane and Ramona Avenue has been closed indefinitely.
Under Section 4902(a) of the PA Vehicle Code, the bridge was closed based on it’s conditions:
The Commonwealth and local authorities with respect to highways and bridges under their jurisdictions may prohibit the operation of vehicles and may impose restrictions as to the weight or size of vehicles operated upon a highway or bridge only when they determine by conducting an engineering and traffic study as provided for in department regulations that the highway or bridge may be damaged or destroyed unless use by vehicles is prohibited or the permissible size or weight of vehicles is reduced.
Specifically, the closure is necessary due to deficient portions of the steel support beams. Moreover, these beams cannot safely carry the legal loads.
Additionally, to ensure the safety of the traveling public, the bridge will be closed to all traffic.
Also, to ensure the safety of the traveling public, the roadway portion of the bridge is closed to all traffic.
Alternative routes
The East Wyoming Avenue Bridge over Frankford Creek and Juniata Golf Course will be closed indefinitely.
A detour will be posted for this closure as follows: Eastbound – Wyoming Avenue to Whitaker Avenue to Luzerne Street to G Street to Hunting Park Avenue to Castor Avenue and for Westbound traffic: Castor Avenue to Hunting Park Avenue to G Street to Luzerne Street to Whitaker Avenue to Wyoming Avenue.
The sidewalks will remain open, and the public will continue to have access to the trail below the bridge.
Lastly, warning signage will be installed along Wyoming Avenue and Castor Avenue to alert the traveling public.
Important to note, expect the Wyoming Avenue roadway to be barricaded at both ends of the bridge. Advanced bridge closed signs will be posted at Maple Lane and Ramona Avenue.
