In West Philadelphia where he was born and raised, Will Smith now has an official street in his name. Wednesday afternoon, the superstar was joined by his mother Caroline Bright Smith to witness the unveiling of the new street name. The 2000 block of N. 59th Street is now known as ‘Will Smith Way’.
Will Smith Way
Indeed, many would argue today was long overdue. We’d have to agree. When we think of celebrities who are homegrown –born and raised in Philadelphia– Will Smith is one who often tops the list.
In fact, city officials referred to him as a “proud son of Philadelphia” and a “hometown superstar”.
Today was a full circle moment for the star.
Outside of his Alma Mater, Overbrook High School, the star witnessed a history-making moment.
The 2000 block of N. 59th Street is now officially ‘Will Smith Way’.
Speaking to a lively and excited crowd, Smith reflected on valuable lessons he leaned throughout life. He also spoke about challenges and how hard work and determination can help to overcome them –especially for Philadelphia natives who know a thing or two about strife.
“When things get hard, you have to be willing to suffer to change the circumstances,” Smith said. “Nobody gets an easy ride. And that was one of the things these streets of Philadelphia taught me, that there is nothing wrong with a hard day’s work.”
During the ceremony, Smith received the keys to the city. Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle L. Parker, who presented both honors, remarked on what Smith means to Philly:
“Wherever you see him in the world, he is unapologetic about letting you know that ‘I’m Will Smith. In West Philadelphia born and raised,” Parker said. “He’s used his creative genius as a unifying tool… We thank you for being humble enough of your people and community, and where you’ve come from.”
A proud moment
Undoubtedly, this was a proud day for Philadelphia natives because we deeply value our hometown heroes.
During today’s ceremony, the “Bad Boys” actor expressed his love for his hometown:
“Philly, I love you,” he said. “I am yours; you are mine.”
For the first time in two decades, he is releasing a new studio album.
His fifth album titled “Based On A True Story” is out this Friday.
