The Northern Liberties neighborhood was stunned by a sudden water main break which occurred Sunday afternoon. At least a 20-inch water main broke on the 1100 block of N 4th Street.
Philadelphia water main break
The water main break caused flooding and damage to properties including one apartment complex where its residents are now displaced. As of this morning, no injuries have been reported and crews are hard at work to clean up the mess.
However, the sudden water main break caused quite the commotion to the bustling neighborhood.
“I saw a car submerged in water and it was next to the fire department … five to 10 minutes later it was hanging on for dear life in the street,” noted Justin Greystone to 6abc, who was impacted by the water main break.
“This caused a significant amount of water damage and flooding to surrounding apartment buildings, stores, private homes, as well as the fire station,” explained Philadelphia Police Inspector D.F. Pace to 6abc.
Many residents in the area are still without power and water.
When will everything be restored?
Crews spent Sunday afternoon and evening stabilizing the situation.
Residents who were stranded were escorted to safety.
Moreover, crew members worked tirelessly to pump out water from properties and businesses.
The crew resumed clean up efforts Monday morning.
The main focus of the clean up crew is to remove mud and debris along Girard Avenue so that SEPTA trolleys can be operational.
The Philadelphia Police Department also set up barriers along Girard Avenue between 3rd and 4th streets to block off traffic.
“I would recommend they find an alternate route … we expect this is a significant break we expect this area to be out of service for some time,” said Inspector Pace.
Additionally, the 1100 block of N. 4th street will remain closed until all repairs are complete and power and water is restored.
