It’s time to lighten up Philadelphia…that is, if your car is darkly tinted. July 1st, 2024 a new ordnance went into effect. The Philadelphia Police Department and the Philadelphia Parking Authority will issue tickets to drivers with illegally tinted windows. This law applies to any cars parking in Philadelphia.
Tinted Windows In Philadelphia
July 1st, 2024 Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker signed into law a new ordinance that will crack down on illegally tinted windows. Any vehicle that is parked in Philadelphia with tinted windows darker than the percentage allowable by the state can be ticketed.
Specifically, in Pennsylvania, the state requires 70% of light contacting the window to pass through it.
City Councilmember Mike Driscoll (D-6th dist.), who drafted the legislation, said in a previous statement, the ordinance was authored “in response to police and public concerns about the proliferation of excessively tinted windows designed to prevent a vehicle operator from being identified.”
Violators Will Be Fined
If a vehicle is parked in the city with illegal tints, the new ordinance applies. It allows both The PPA as well as The PPD to issue a ticket to any violators.
Important to note, usually tinting that is installed in a vehicle by a manufacturer typically complies with state regulations.
However, in most cases, tinting done by independent installers may not.
“While many who have had their windows tinted are law abiding citizens and have done so without any ill intent, we know that others have installed illegal tinting for the express purpose to avoid identification while committing crimes or engaging in inherently dangerous activities such as illegal street racing and drifting,” Councilmember Mike Driscoll (D-6th dist.) said in a statement. “As city officials, we will not tolerate activities that endanger those who live and work here.”
The ordinance was signed into law by Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker and went into effect on Monday.
Those who violate the new law will face a $100 fine.
