Chef Jose Garces

Chef Jose Garces is a James Beard Award-winning chef, restaurateur, and philanthropist. Indeed, his influence on the culinary world is transforming the food scene in Philadelphia. As one of the nation’s most respected Latin-American chefs, Garces has built a reputation for his inventive flavors, diverse restaurant portfolio, and commitment to giving back to the community.
Garces’ culinary journey began with his Ecuadorian heritage, which continues to inspire his bold and flavorful spin on food. After honing his skills in kitchens across the country, he opened his first restaurant, Amada, in Philadelphia in 2005, bringing authentic Spanish tapas to the City of Brotherly Love.
This was just the beginning of what would become the Garces Group, a collection of restaurants spanning multiple cuisines and locations.
If you don’t know Chef Garces, chances are, you’ve eaten at one of his restaurants.
One of our favorite establishments is Village Whiskey, known for its gourmet burgers and extensive whiskey selection.

Beyond his success in the restaurant industry, Garces is committed to supporting food sustainability and underserved communities. In 2012, he launched the Garces Foundation, a nonprofit that provides critical resources, medical care, and educational programs to Philadelphia’s immigrant food service workers. The foundation’s initiatives help ensure that those who contribute to the hospitality industry receive the support they need to thrive.
In addition to his restaurants and philanthropy, Garces has appeared on television as an Iron Chef and has authored cookbooks sharing his expertise. Through his innovative cuisine, business acumen, and charitable efforts, Jose Garces continues to leave a lasting impact on Philadelphia’s culinary scene and beyond.
