Indeed, Autumn is here and while Philadelphia is filled with beautiful places to go leaf-peeping and fun things to do during the season, winter is on the horizon. Wondering what to look forward to for the winter forecast? Read on to find out what Farmer’s Almanac is calling a “wet winter whirlwind.”
Winter forecast 2024-2025
Winter officially begins with the start of the astrological winter solstice December 21st, 2024. Thanks to La Niña, winter is expected to be “wet and cold for most locations” including the Northeast. Specifically, cities like Philadelphia is forecasted to be stormy with above-normal amounts of winter precipitation and near-to above-normal temperatures.
Obviously, Philadelphians have gotten use to snowless winters and this upcoming winter season may be no different. In fact, it was only last January, that the city finally saw more than two inches of snow, breaking its record for the longest period of without at least an inch of snow.
According to Farmer’s Almanac, snow will be most prevalent over the interior and mountainous terrains.
Sleet and rain will be more common near the coast, especially near and along the I-95 corridor.
Moreover, looking ahead, they’re “red flagging” the final week of January for most of the eastern half of the country. During this time, a very active storm track is expected and will deliver frequent bouts of heavy precipitation, as well as strong and gusty winds.
January 20 to 23 and 24 to 27 are dates to remember. And could bring copious amounts of snow, rain, sleet, and ice (depending on where you live).
So Philly may have to gear up for more slushing than sleighing.
