Heat has arrived! Philadelphia is preparing for a sweltering stretch of weather. Forecasters warn that record-breaking heat could grip the city through the middle of the week.
After a relatively mild spring, temperatures are expected to surge into the mid-90s on Monday before climbing even higher on Tuesday, when highs could approach 98 degrees across the region. With humidity factored in, conditions may feel even hotter through the afternoon hours.
The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for Philadelphia and several surrounding counties in both Pennsylvania and New Jersey as the season’s first major heat wave settles in.
Meteorologists say Monday’s forecasted high of 95 degrees could surpass the city’s standing daily record of 94 degrees. Then, Tuesday may bring even more extreme conditions as temperatures inch closer to triple digits unusually early in the season.
Philadelphia’s record-breaking heat won’t last long
While the beginning of the week will feel more like midsummer, the drastic heat is expect to fade quickly.
By Wednesday afternoon, scattered storms could begin moving through the area as cooler air pushes into the region. Temperatures are then expected to tumble dramatically heading into the holiday weekend.
Forecasts currently show highs dropping back into the 60s by Friday, bringing a sharp contrast from the scorching conditions earlier in the week. Rain is also expected to move in throughout Memorial Day weekend. Expect a potentially damp and chilly setup for outdoor plans.
Beat the heat
Officials are encouraging residents to stay hydrated and imit prolonged outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours. Additionally, check on vulnerable neighbors during the dangerous heat.
For now, Philly residents may want to prepare for a few days of intense summer-like weather before jackets and umbrellas make an unexpected return just in time for the unofficial start of summer.
