History of the Hot Dog
Undoubtedly, Hot dogs, as we know them today, have their origins in Germany. The sausages that eventually became hot dogs were brought to the United States by German immigrants in the 19th century.
Firstly references to dachshund sausages and ultimately hot dogs can be traced to German immigrants in the 1800s.
Secondly, according to hot dog historian Bruce Kraig, Ph.D., the name hot dog probably began as a joke about the Germans’ small, long, thin dogs. Ever the butt of humor and rumor, the moniker that stuck was likely a joke regarding the provenance of the tasty sausage served on a bun cut lengthwise.
Lastly, since then, hot dogs have become an iconic American food, enjoyed at ballparks, barbecues, and street vendors across the country.
