If you drive in Philly, prepare for some serious detours. As of today, long-term road closures are officially in effect on Kelly Drive and Market Street– two of the city’s busiest corridors. Whether you’re headed to work, the art museum, or just cruising through, expect traffic changes and delays.
🌙 Kelly Drive road closures start this week
Starting today, sections of Kelly Drive will be shut down nightly from 8PM to 6AM for milling and paving through August 29.
The closures will rotate between two major stretches:
- Ridge Avenue to Fountain Green Drive (near the Ulysses S. Grant statue)
- During the closure, southbound Kelly Drive motorists will be directed to use Ridge Avenue, 33rd Street (U.S. 13), Diamond Drive, Reservoir Drive, and Fountain Green Drive.
- Northbound Kelly Drive motorists will be directed to use Fountain Green Drive, Reservoir Drive, Diamond Drive, 33rd Street (U.S. 13), and Ridge Avenue
- Reservoir Drive to 25th Street (by the Philadelphia Museum of Art)
- During the closure, southbound Kelly Drive motorists will be directed to use Reservoir Drive/Strawberry Mansion, Diamond Drive, 33rd Street, Girard Avenue, 29th Street, Pennsylvania Avenue, and 25th Street to access Kelly Drive.
- Northbound Kelly Drive motorists will be directed to use 25th Street, Pennsylvania Avenue, 27th Street, Girard Avenue, 33rd Street, Diamond Drive, and Reservoir Drive to access Kelly Drive.
Important to note, this is just first phase.
Once the paving the done, expect daytime lane closures to follow as PennDOT crews handle additional repairs to inlets and manholes.
đźš« Market Street Westbound shut down through fall
Meanwhile in Old City, motorists can expect another major detour.
Specifically, Market Street’s westbound lanes from 2nd to 6th Streets are fully closed until November 17 for major utility and roadwork.
- Eastbound lanes remain open
- Westbound traffic will be detoured via Front, Arch, and 6th Streets
The closure is part of ongoing utility and roadway work to upgrade infrastructure in the area.
⏰ Road closures = plan ahead Philly.
Delays are inevitable. Between overnight work on Kelly Drive and a months-long Market Street shutdown, drivers are urged to allow extra time, consider alternate routes, or use public transportation when possible.
Indeed, these aren’t quick fixes. However, they’re necessary updates that will take time but aim to improve Philly’s roadways in the long run.
