Philadelphia’s award-winning dining scene just earned some major recognition. Kalaya, the celebrated Southern Thai restaurant in Fishtown, has secured the No. 11 spot on North America’s 50 Best Restaurants list for 2026. The honor further cements its place among the continent’s most acclaimed dining destinations. The ranking was announced during the organization’s awards ceremony in New Orleans on May 28.
Kalaya named one of North America’s best restaurants

This marks the second consecutive year Kalaya has appeared on the prestigious list. And, once again makes it the only Southern Thai restaurant recognized by the rankings.
Last year, Kalaya debuted at No. 7 on the inaugural North America’s 50 Best Restaurant list. Chef and co-owner Chutatip “Nok” Suntaranon was named North America’s Best Female Chef.
One of Philadelphia’s most celebrated restaurants

Since opening in 2019, Kalaya has become one of Philadelphia’s most celebrated restaurants, introducing diners to the vibrant flavors and traditions of Southern Thailand.
The restaurant quickly landed on national “Best New Restaurant” lists. From Esquire to Food & Wine, the accolades began pouring in.
The restaurant has earned several James Beard Award nominations since opening. Suntaranon won the James Beard Award for Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic in 2023. She has also been recognized on TIME’s 100 Most Influential People list and Forbes’ 50 Over 50 list.
Reflecting on the recognition, Suntaranon said:
“At Kalaya, every detail is deeply personal. Named after my mother, I aim to bring her and pride for Southern Thai cuisine to the community, and being able to showcase the flavors and memories of my childhood within the 50 Best ecosystem is incredibly special.”
Defined Hospitality co-owner Greg Root also praised the restaurant’s continued success. He noted the team’s gratitude for the community that has supported Kalaya’s growth.
A culinary gem worth discovering

Located at 4 W. Palmer Street in Fishtown, Kalaya has become a cornerstone of Philadelphia’s evolving culinary landscape. By maintaining a top-25 ranking for two consecutive years, the restaurant continues to elevate the city’s reputation as one of North America’s premier food destinations while honoring the authentic traditions of Southern Thai cooking.
