The votes are in! Herr’s 2023 ‘Flavored By Philly’ Chip Contest returned this year much to the delight of snack lovers throughout Philadelphia.
A Contest With Flavor
The Flavored By Philly competition recognizes local, small businesses and the unique flavors they add to our city. “We wanted to figure out how can we work with other local family businesses that do food, right,” Ed Herr, chairman and CEO of Herr’s, told Philadelphia Magazine. “So we created this partnership with folks to highlight the great flavors of Philadelphia.”
The three contenders were Corropolese Italian Bakery & Deli’s Tomato Pie, John’s Roast Pork’s Roast Pork Sandwich, and Mike’s BBQ’s Korean BBQ Wings.
Notably, over 17,600 people voted declaring Corropolese Italian Bakery & Deli’s Tomato Pie the new Flavored By Philly champion.
The winning flavor according to Herr’s, “delivers an explosion of flavors, from the juicy sweetness of ripe tomatoes to the aromatic blend of herbs and spices topped off with Romano cheese” — a “taste experience that will transport snack enthusiasts to the heart of Philadelphia’s food culture.”
Flavored By Philly
Indeed it was a very close call. In a press release, CEO Ed Herr called the competition “closely contested.”
The grand prize winner of the competition is two-fold.
Corropolese will be awarded a grand prize of $10,000. David Gilmartin of Royersford came up with the flavor idea and will receive $5,000.
The runners-up would receive $2,500 and their nominators would be awarded $1,000.
However, Corropolese plans on donating his winnings to The Ronald McDonald House and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
“A few months back, I had a grandson born at CHOP,” said Corropolese to Philadelphia Magazine. “He had some issues, and CHOP was really great with him and us. So we figured we’d give back a little bit to say thank you.”
