Philly just got a little richer -in culture, flavor, and community. On March 30th, Haraz Coffee House opened its doors at 3421 Chestnut Street, introducing University City to the deep, soulful tradition of Yemeni coffee. As the city’s first specialty Yemeni café, Haraz isn’t just serving drinks -it’s serving history in a cup.
Haraz Coffee House now open

Coffee lovers, this is your moment! Yemen is the considered the birthplace of the international coffee trade, dating back to the 15th century. At Haraz, you’ll taste that heritage firsthand through organic, sun-dried beans sourced directly from small-scale farmer in Yemen’s Haraz Mountains. The beans are grown with intention and care, brining bold, earthy flavor with every pour -and a story with every sip.
Step inside, and you’ll be welcomed by a space that feels both rooted and refreshing.
Haraz beautifully blends Middle Eastern warmth with modern café aesthetics, creating an atmosphere that feels like home to all.
Students, creatives, professionals, families, and especially members of the SWANA community will find more than just a caffeine fix here –they’ll find connection, comfort, and culture.

Indeed, what makes Haraz even more exciting is what’s ahead. Plans are already in motion for additional locations across the city, including an upcoming women-owned outpost in Fishtown. With each new shop, Haraz is not only growing a business, but it’s also growing a movement grounded in equity, empowerment, and tradition.
“We’re excited to introduce Philly to a unique coffee culture that has been at the heart of Yemen’s history for centuries,” says co-owner Hamza Shaikh. “Our goal is to create a space where people from all backgrounds can connect over incredible coffee and celebrate Yemen’s legacy in the global coffee trade.”
Haraz is more than a coffee shop—it’s a cultural bridge, brewed with purpose.
