You’ve seen Candlelight in Philadelphia: a room washed in amber, a quartet poised, the city’s pace softening for an hour. But how does that quiet arrive?
Think thousands of candles—5,000 candles, 15,000 candles, sometimes 30,000 candles. Always scaled to the chosen venue and multiplied for mood. It looks effortless because all the effort had occurred hours before the performance began, and the audience took their seats. The scale is the work, the production the magic, and the team behind the setup, part of masterminds behind Candlelight.

Behind the glow: the set up
Unpacking: boxes open, trays lift, rows of candles appear. Placement: clusters turn into lines along aisles, bringing every corner of the beautiful theatre to life. Lighting: switches click, wicks awaken by sequence—one by one, then in waves—until the room glows like a breathing thing.
That’s when the atmosphere lands. In a space like the Media Theatre For The Performing Arts, every corner of the grand room feels slightly more romantic than it did before. To put it in perspective: imagine setting a candle on every step of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, then tracing the Benjamin Franklin Parkway—light after light—and still having trays to spare.
And when the applause fades, it all reverses. Lights out. Candles gathered. Lines unmade. The room returns to itself. Then it happens again—night after night, venue after venue—because the glow is carefully rebuilt every time.
So the next time you arrive at Candlelight in Philadelphia, you’ll read the room differently. You’ll feel the calm and recognize the craft behind it—the quiet choreography that lets music lead. The effect stays with you because it’s made, patiently, for you and this city.
